Trying Organic Shampoo for the First Time?

Everything You Should Know About Soapnut-Based Shampoos and other Organic shampoos

NOTE! When you switch from conventional to organic shampoo, your hair and scalp need time to adjust to the absence of synthetic ingredients like sulfates and silicones

What to Expect:

  • Increased Oiliness/Greasy Feeling: Conventional shampoos often strip your scalp of its natural oils (sebum). Your scalp may initially over-produce oil to compensate, resulting in a greasy or waxy feel. This is the most common and challenging part of the transition.

  • Less Lather: Organic shampoos use gentler, plant-derived cleansers, so they generally don't foam up as much as traditional shampoos. Don't feel the need to use more product just to get more bubbles!

  • Different Texture: Your hair might feel slightly sticky, frizzy, or heavy as the previous product buildup (especially silicones) is removed.

  • Duration: This phase varies greatly but typically lasts from a few weeks up to a month (around 5-8 washes) as your scalp rebalances its natural oil production. Patience is key!

Tips to Manage It:

  • Rinse Thoroughly: Make sure you rinse the shampoo out really well, especially during the transition.

  • Wash Less Often (If Possible): Try to extend the time between washes to let your scalp regulate.

  • Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) Rinse: An occasional rinse of diluted ACV (about 1 part ACV to 3 parts water) can help restore your scalp's pH balance and cut through buildup.

  • Double Cleanse: On your wash days, you can shampoo twice if your hair feels very oily after the first wash.

Benefits of  Soapnut-based Shampoo

After you get through the adjustment phase, you should start to see the long-term benefits:

  • Healthier Scalp: Gentle ingredients can help reduce irritation, itching, and flaking, leading to a more balanced scalp.

  • Improved Hair Health: Without harsh stripping agents, your hair can retain its natural moisture, leading to better texture, reduced frizz, and natural shine.

  • Reduced Chemical Exposure: You're avoiding common synthetic ingredients like Sulfates (strong detergents), Parabens (preservatives), and Phthalates (often in synthetic fragrances).

  • Environmental Friendliness: Many organic ingredients and their production/disposal are better for the planet.
